Other newspapers such as The Gleaner and Yukon World emerged. Most publications had lively partisan editorials. By 1909, though, with Dawson's economic slowdown, the News had the field to itself. In 1954 the News ceased operations, a severe blow to Dawson only a year after the territorial capital's relocation to Whitehorse. A small group of local women who had been meeting since the 1940s wrote a long letter about Dawson events, mailing it to former residents. This became the typewritten fortnightly Klondike Korner newsletter. It ended about 1988; The Klondike Sun began a year later.
